6 September 1976 Mount Peary, Argentine Islands

Dave Lewis has written, from the United States, to say that he was a friend of Graham Whitfield who was lost with companions Geoffrey Hargreaves and Michael Walker during their return from the ascent of Mount Peary, Argentine Islands, Antarctic Peninsula.
Dave and Graham were both at Liverpool University where Graham majored in geology. They were both members of the Liverpool University Exploration Society. Graham’s family was from Rotherham.
Dave writes, "Attached is a photo of Graham, taken when we were in the Alps in the summer of 1973 and he was about twenty one. The shot was taken by Richard Miles, the third member of our team, in the cable car descending from the Aiguille du Midi. We got caught in a storm ascending the Aiguille the previous day and spent the night in a refuge before trekking to the cable car in the morning and descending to our tent in Snell’s Field outside Chamonix. The picture captures Graham’s level gaze and hints at his energy, his sense of adventure, his perpetual good humour."
You can read more about Graham and the circumstances surrounding the accident in the Memoire by Jim Turton.
Antarctic Place Name
The descent from Mount Peary – September 1976
Hargreaves Spur, Walker Ridge and Whitfield Ridge all features close to Mount Peary where Geoffrey Hargreaves, Michael Walker, and Graham Whitfield were believed to have been killed in an avalanche or serac fall on descent from its summit they had reached on 6 September 1976 from Faraday Research Station, Argentine Islands.

Whitfield Ridge 65°15’23”S, 63°52’20”W Named for Graham Whitfield (1952-1976), physicist; Ridge running south west from Mount Peary, forming the northern edge of Bussey Glacier.
Peter Salino has drawn attention to an image of the ridge that would have been traversed by the three climbers who were killed in the avalanche. It is the ridge leading to the summit of Mount Peary which is in the background of this image of FIDS climbing on Lumiere Peak. Terry Tallis took the photo on the first ascent of Lumiere Peak and the climbers are Frank Stacey and Tony Bushell.

Peter Salino has sent a panorama of the Mount Peary region created by Neil Wickens which has been annotated to show the three features named for Geoffry Hargreaves, Mike Walker and Graham Whitfield.
