«Memory of Antarctica» is a worldwide digital database in memory of the people who lost their lives on the sixth continent.
We have been searching for stories about them since 2016. Their heroic deeds often go unmentioned in geography textbooks, but without them the exploration of Antarctica would be impossible. The humankind gave away their lives, such is the price for the opportunity to learn more about the sixth continent. At one point in 2018 we recorded an interview with Carla Kostkova, the widow of Old□ich Kostka, Czech explorer. He died in 1960 in a fire at Mirny Station, and his wife had a century-long life. She was almost a hundred years old when we met. On that day, Carla brought a box full of memories: letters, newspaper clippings, photographs and documents. After the interview she remarked: “Now I understand why the Lord has granted me such a long life! I had to wait for you to preserve the memory of my husband”.
30 states currently have polar stations active in Antarctica. All the countries that signed the Antarctic Treaty have been invited to take part in gathering information for the database
