On October 5, 2008, at about 4 a.m. local time, a fire broke out in a residential two-storey complex of the Russian Antarctic Progress station. Personnel could not extinguish the flames on their own, and the whole building burnt down to a crisp as a result.
Yury Dostavalov, one of the members of the construction team, died in the fire. Two other builders suffered major fractures and injuries.
The burned building was put up in 1991 in the oasis of the Larsemann Hills on the coast of Prudes Bay. The Chinese Antarctic Zhongshan station is situated 1,5 km from Progress. The Asian explorers did a much-needed diagnostic medical check on one of the injured Russians and presented their colleagues with necessary sleeping gear and items for personal hygiene.
